Mixed Methods Research
Question
RSCHWK9 Using the attached articles as a basis: Describe to what extent is mixed methods research simply taking a quantitative design and a qualitative design and putting them together?” Next, explain the types of research questions best served by mixed methods research. Then, explain one strength and one limitation of mixed methods research. Finally, provide a rationale for or against the utility of mixed methods research in your discipline. Additional Resource to be used: “Burkholder, G. J., Cox, K. A., & Crawford, L. M. (2016). The scholar-practitioner’s guide to research design. Answer
Mixed method research is a contemporary research methodology that entails collecting, analyzing, and combining both qualitative and quantitative data for a more comprehensive analysis (Collins & O’cathain, 2009). Mixed method research is an intricate combination between quantitative methods that are close-ended and qualitative methods that tend to be open-ended and predominantly subjective. This well-integrated method of research combines social and scientific data for an analysis that is more contextual and accurate (Burkholder, Cox and Crwaford, 2016). Qualitative and quantitative measures offer a complementary scheme of analysis where opposing or alternate spectrums are evaluated in a self-supporting cycle.
Mixed method research incorporates questionnaires that combine specific proportions, measures of statistics or testing of hypothesis and measures of attitudes and behaviors (Johnson & Onwuegbuzie, 2004). The statistical data is used to create mathematical patterns of probability while the non-statistical data often guides the analysis on factors influencing those actual figures. Qualitative questions offer insight on the context in which quantitative facts occur. One of the strongest aspects of mixed methods is the increased capacity to triangulate and deeply analyze all influencing factors within the subject (Scott and Darlington, 2002). Besides, this method offers a sophisticated space for justification and verification.
Nevertheless, a major limitation of the methodology arises from the delicate task of balancing between qualitative and quantitative methods within a single research. Diversity in research topics and the actual occurrence both offer a specific environment for every subject. In this respect, it is extremely difficult to properly align both aspects and tailor each method to suit the situation and satisfy the requirements within a mixed method approach. In management, mixed methodologies are crucial for examining the increasing interaction between social, cultural, structural and economic environments (Mahoney and Goertz, 2012). Human interaction and socialization are keen aspects of modern communities and business communities, and so, must be focused on alongside the dominant scientific and structural identities of operation.
