Comparing Care Service Quality Provided in Public and Private Hospitals

Healthcare sectors are very vital in any given society as they ensure the continuity of life. As such, government need to direct a lot of attention and money to its systems. Both public and private hospitals play a big role in regards to taking care of patients’ needs, for example through emergency services. The aim of this essay is to compare the service quality delivered by the public and private hospitals with respect to three main findings. These findings include empathy, tangibility and timeliness.

First, empathy plays a big role in determining whether the wait at the hospital or treatment is worth it. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. It is the ability to put oneself in the shoes of a person who is undergoing suffering. How a hospital staff and personnel approaches a patient says a lot about the hospital’s professionalism as well as quality assurance. The staffs at public hospitals tends to be grumpy all the time, in a rush and they always keep reminding the patients that there are other people awaiting treatment. They don’t take their time to carefully attend to a patient. On the other hand, the staffs at private hospitals tend to be more responsive and empathetic.  This explains why, for example, the cases of pregnant women giving birth on the corridors of hospitals while waiting to be attended to are more common in public hospitals as opposed to private hospitals. Yes, public hospitals accommodate everyone, but this should not be used as an excuse for poor quality of care.

Secondly, the tangibility of any facility determines the quality of the service at first glance. Tangibility in this case refers to those things that can actually be seen and touched. These elements include the hygienic conditions at the hospital, waiting facilities for patients, availability of equipment, and water supply. Truthfully, all these variables are better in private hospitals compared to public hospitals. The latter tend to have a shortage of everything probably due to the act that they handle many patients at a go. They tend to refer people to other pharmaceuticals to buy the medicine most of the time after giving prescriptions. My aunt, for example, upon going to a private hospital, was handed the medicine immediately on request after prescription while her friend who went to a public hospital had to drive back to the local pharmacy in order to buy the prescribed medicine.

Lastly, timeliness is an important factor in deciding the quality of a hospital. It plays a critical role especially when emergency cases arise. In timeliness, focus is on the idea of patients being observed according to appointments made and timely delivery of reports. Private hospitals tend to be much better at making and keeping appointments as opposed to public hospitals. Consequently, people who seek medical help in private hospitals are more likely to manage their time better than their counterparts who prefer to attend public hospitals. Of course, this only applies to non-emergency cases. Sadly, public hospitals have a tendency to respond to emergencies in an extremely slow manner. Not so long ago, my classmate was taken to a certain public hospital in an ambulance after collapsing during a sporting event. The general feeling would be that if a patient is driven to a hospital in an ambulance then it is an actual emergency. Unfortunately, the public hospital staff kept the patient waiting because they could not treat the case as an emergency; they needed some payment made before they could commence the treatment. Tragedy struck, and my classmate died before his parents could arrive to take care of the bill.

In conclusion, it is clear that private hospitals offer better and quality services than public hospitals. The disadvantage would be that they are considerably expensive hence only a few people can afford them. At the same time, it is worth noting that public hospitals are more accessible by people of all classes as opposed to private hospitals. They are larger than private hospitals and as such tend to hold a larger number of people. This is mainly because they are funded by the government hence readily accessible to the common citizen. The numbers can be very overwhelming at times so we must not forget to notice their effort and give credit where due. Hospitals should treat the appointment situation more seriously as this ensures that the doctors are available on time in order to avoid development of diseases due to prolonged checkups. On the other hand, public hospitals should be made aware of their weakness and work on them because ultimately, they are the hospitals that most people go to, despite their poor quality. All in all, the government should look into providing sufficient funds, equipment and personnel to hospitals.  After all, healthy humans help maintain capital that contributes to the country’s development.
