Answer

  1. Using some of the examples, please describe how the tasting experience contributes to understanding wine styles and wine making.

A wine tasting experience makes it incredible for one to understand winemaking and wine styles. For example, if a person sips wine for the first time, he or she may find it slightly tart. In other words, the term crisp can quickly come to the mind. Such a scenario implies that acidity is the dominant style in that wine. Acidity refers to a wine’s tartness that makes it refreshing to the tongue, leaving an individual with a desire to have more. When a person mentions that a certain wine is fresh, bright, or crisp, it means that the drink possesses an excellent acidity. The terminologies are mainly used when talking about white wine. However, red wines can as well be fresh and crisp. From this experience, it is deducible that a person is likely to learn more about winemaking.

Oak and stainless steel are perfect examples of wine making styles that people can learn through the tasting experience. Oak enhances wine color and rounds out flavors. It also softens and gives unique characteristics. Most white and red wines are placed in oak barrels prior to bottling for better taste. It is important to note that winemakers may use excessive oak in wine the same way chefs can put immoderate salt in dishes. If all a person tastes is the oak characteristics instead of the fruit, then it implies that the wine is unbalanced. On the contrary, if a wine has a liquid butter taste, the wine has too much oak. Take an example where one buys a Chardonnay aged in oak and the other in steel. After pouring them in different glasses and tasting one after another, the unoaked wine will have a prominent taste of the fruit. The wine will as well taste fresher because of the presence of acidity. The oaked wine will also have certain elements of fruit but not crisp and bright. The experiences are proofs that wine tasting aids in a better understanding of wine styles and processing.

  • Briefly discuss the difference of viniculture vs viticulture in wine making.

Viticulture involves the science, cultivation, and production of grapes. It entails a series of activities that take place in vineyards. The concept of viniculture is applied when grapes are used in making wine. Viticulturists monitor the growth of grapes and control diseases and pests. They are as well involved in managing canopy and assessing fruit characteristics and development. They decide when vine pruning and harvest occur. Thus, winemaking heavily relies on viticulture. Viticulture is closely linked to winemaking since grape characteristics and wine management are the basis from which winemaking commences. It is through viticulture that grapes are cultivated, harvested and later used in wine production. The global wine industries comprise two important activities such as winemaking and viticulture.

Viniculture and viticulture are among the many factors influencing the nature and future directions of wine production. A decline in the growth and production of grapes affects wine industries directly. Viticulture dictates the quality and quantity of grapes; hence, the growth and development of wine production depend on this process. The first stage of the wine industry’s economic activity begins at the vineyard. Winemaking entails producing wine by crushing and fermenting grapes. This is known as the second stage of winemaking that takes place in the winery.

3. End with a personal “take” on the experience. (For this, you need to make up your own tasting experience.)

I always appreciate any chance to taste wines.  There are several wines in the world that a person can select. My winetasting experience was fun and an amazing way to know what I liked or hated about wines. Winetasting gave me an opportunity to try new wines without worrying about buying a whole bottle that I may not like. I did a walk-around wine tasting whereby different wines were set on tables then people went around trying. I established that some wines were crisp and fresh and immediately concluded that acidity was the dominant feature in such wines. It was a tantalizing experience, which made me want to have more wine. I enjoyed tasting white wine the most because they were bright, crisp and had refreshing sensations. Sone wines were slightly tart, implying that they were more acidic.

I was unable to identify certain wines regardless of the many times that I tasted them. I, however, loved the fact that our wine tasting host was informative and approachable. The host helped and guided me through my tasting. I was keen on the clarity and color of the wines. Thus, establishing that some were dark, watery while others were clear or cloudy. Swirling allowed me to identify whether a given wine had a higher content of alcohol. For instance, when you swirl glass and more droplets cling inside, it shows the level of alcohol in that drink. My strong sense of smell assisted me with this experience. As I brought the glass up to my nose, I identified red and black fruits. The wine tasting was a stunning avenue, which boosted my knowledge of wines. I am now able to identify wines correctly and select wines according to my preference.
