The Los Angeles transport system has been transformed significantly since the early 20th century. The American city began as an agricultural town and has grown into one of the largest metropolises in the world. Since its inception, Los Angeles has been served by different systems of transit. Among the earliest transport systems is the railroad. The Los Angeles railway system consisted of a system of streetcars that were commonly referred to as the red and yellow cars. The systems were taken up by private operators who started investing in electric streetcar lines that served many parts of Los Angeles. The streetcars offered the largest trolley system at that time. The electric streetcar rose to become a popular means of transport hence overtaking the railroads. At that time, Los Angeles experienced a large population boom and electric cars offered the cheapest means of transport for most residents.

            The second phase of the transit system of Los Angeles consisted of the adoption of automobiles. Suburb communities were created along the railway lines that served the towns. However, the emergence of single-family tract houses contributed to the shift from streetcars to automobiles. The single family pattern that became popular after the World War II resulted in the dependence on private automobile transportation in the Los Angeles region. The use of automobiles increased flexibility as people could settle in any part and create roads for transportation. The popularity of the automobiles resulted in increased dependence on the form of transport. Decentralization also greatly contributed to the automobile popularity. This led to the introduction of a masterplan for a freeway that commenced construction in the 1950s. The freeway greatly contributed to the Los Angeles landscape that consists of mountains and rivers. The freeway became important in serving the decentralized system. The freeways dominate the physical landscape and are used to interconnect the various towns in California.

            The demise of the streetcars is linked to the General Motors streetcar conspiracy that included the company buying large shares and eventually owning the streetcars, after which they contributed to their inefficiency. This was done in a quest to monopolize surface transportation by supplying the National City Lines with their buses. Dismantling the streetcar system led to the conversion of the transit system from the streetcars to buses. The railroads became obsolete with most people opting to use buses or buy their own automobiles.

            The menace of the Los Angeles transport system has resulted in new planning strategies that have also caused political struggles. The Los Angeles Metropolitan Transport Authority was created and given a mandate to plan the public transit. The agency operated the privately owned bus lines that existed as well as the streetcars. The Southern California Rapid Transit District was also created with an aim of improving the bus networks (Sloane 163). However, plans to improve the Metro system that includes the mass transit system, Metro rail, and Metro Transitway have been hampered by political struggles concerning the amount of money required to implement them. However, a commuter rail system known as the Metrolink has successfully been created that provides an alternative system for the existing road transport. Los Angeles people have also been urged to use bicycles as a means of transport to act as an alternative to private automobiles (Sloane 184). The creation of mass transit systems that have been dubbed rubber on tires have made people to shift from private cars to public transport (Sloane 188). It runs parallel to the freeway system. The new systems of transport have the potential to influence people to move from private transport to public transport. They have also resulted in saving of time since they are not subject to the solid traffic that is experienced in freeways. People have more time to engage in other things that include engagement with the community. Transport in Los Angeles will be transformed to make it easy and less time-consuming.
