Introduction

First e-Activity

The AFL-CIO is involved in work aimed at helping workers come together as unions with a view to bargain collectively with employers in order to get the job done in the best way and under the best working conditions. On the other hand, CTW is involved in organizing campaigns for private-sector workers in the middle- and working-class in America to ensure that they get the benefits they deserve. CTW is a coalition of unions that broke away from AFL-CIO after expressing discontent with its leadership (Masters, Gibney & Zagenczyk, 2006). The strategic plan for AFL-CIO is centered on expanding membership beyond unions by working with various community partners and grassroots groups with a view to revive the falling clout of the labor movement. CTW’s strategic plan features multifaceted organizing of middle- and working-class workers in industries find it difficult to outsource jobs, such as health care, hotels, and retailing with the aim of building membership and increasing leverage over various sectors. Both of these strategic plans provide direction for growth simply because they promote the idea of expanding membership.

The position of the NLRB regarding representation election campaigning is that certain campaign propaganda may violate the provisions of the National Labor Relations Act. The NLRB is also of the view that employees should not be unlawfully be discharged for participating in representation election campaigns. Supervisors involved in unionization campaigns should avoid engaging in activities that are in conflict with their obligations to their employers to avoid unfair labor practices. At the same time, they should also avoid promising any employee a pay increase, improved working conditions, special favors, or promotion on condition that he or she votes against joining a union (Joyce, 1987). Moreover, they should avoid telling employees that their wages would have been increased were it not for the commencement of the union campaign. However, the supervisors can legally inform employees that they and the employer are not in support of unionization (Joyce, 1987). They can also avoid unfair labor practices by informing employees of the drawbacks of joining a labor union, such as the regular payment of dues and membership fees as well as the possibility of hefty fines.
