Effective Coalition Leadership

            Effective leadership refers to is the ability of a leader to create an inspiring vision of the future, to coach and build a team capable of achieving this vision, and to motivate people to engage with the vision in addition to managing its delivery even when faced with failure (Goodman, 2014 p.670).On the other hand, a coalition is a union of people or organizations working together to achieve an agreed-upon set of goals and objectives (Goodman, 2014 p.670). Coalitions may be formed in order for a group of companies of people to conserve resources, achieve maximum output using minimal output, to create greater credibility, and also to provide a forum that will facilitate information and idea-sharing. These papers seek to describe the various elements necessary for effective leadership within a coalition.


            In order to achieve effective leadership within a coalition, there needs to be strong effective leaders, be they managers or members of the board of directors. They should be able to formulate a vision for the coalition and proceed on to lead members of the team towards achieving the set-out goals and objectives. The leaders need to be focused, task-oriented, inclusive, motivating and ready to resolve any conflicts that may arise within the coalition. They must also always be ready to put the needs of the coalition well ahead of their own and to work with the good of the coalition in mind at all times. The second element that contributes to effective leadership in a coalition is the presence of a clear and well-defined organizational structure. Roles need to be clearly defined along with a set of structures and practices as well as a code of ethics. In order to be effective, leaders need to know whom they are directing to do what and what it is exactly that needs to be done (Mason, Gardner, Outlaw,& O’Grady, 2016). The organizational structure also needs to be well laid out so that the members of the coalition can be aware of who consult and how information flows.

            The third element necessary for achieving effective leadership within a coalition is the membership capacity to do the work. Members need to clearly understand the tasks they need to perform and also have a readiness to perform them. They need to be aware of the coalition development process so that they can have an ingrained sense of ownership of the coalition and also reduce the turnover rates of the coalition. The necessary level of support needs to be provided for the members so as to create a good working environment. Focused, well-motivated and loyal members offer little or no resistance to leadership and if anything support the leaders towards achievement of the coalition’s goals (Teitelbaum&Wilensky, 2016).

Finally, the sustainability of the coalition is a significant indicator of effective leadership. If a leader is secure in his/ her position and the coalition is running as a going concern, the leadership demonstrated becomes effective. There needs to be an efficient framework for recruiting new members and recognizing the efforts being made by the current ones(Nannini& Crocker, 2010 p.24). The coalition’s goals and strategies need to be continually integrated into the mission and vision of the individual organizations and to align them with individual members’ aspirations.


            In conclusion, the presence of effective leadership within a coalition is not something that comes automatically; rather it must be achieved using consistent and concerted efforts. The presence of strong leadership, clear organizational structures, and the members ability and willingness to carry out the coalition’s tasks as well as ensuring its sustainability, all work hand in hand to ensure effective leadership within a coalition. This kind of leadership is essential in a coalition as it creates an overall working condition that enhances achievement of the stipulated goals and objectives, facilitates satisfaction of the coalition’s members and ensures timely achievement of an organization’s mission and vision.
