Public Health Paper
Leading in Collaboration Setting
Being a peer counselor in public health, I have to understand my community, act as a link between health and the community, build an individual capacity by expanding health knowledge, and improve service delivery quality. I serve to connect the city to healthcare, the social service system, and the government. As a peer counselor (Turnock, 2014), it is my responsibility to provide informal counseling, support healthier behaviors and lifestyle choices, and follow-up pushing for local health needs.
In the West of Chicago, little villages suffer from drug addiction influenced by the increase of Mexican drug cartels. Problems with drug addiction spiral homelessness in the region as drug and alcohol abuse levels are relatively high among the homeless. Since 2006, the American government has been at war with the Mexican Drug Cartels.
Initiating a process that brings individuals together, it is essential to be action oriented to inspire commitment and action even when nothing else is working, convincing people that something can be done. Apeer problem solver will help others by create visions, solve problems, and engage in command and behavior control. I will call upon my practical communication skills to convey issues and solutions, know when to talk, and listen. By working on my long-term thinking capacity, I will plan for the future and set goals for the communities.
To address drug addiction, I propose two solutions, (a) carrying out mass media campaigns through radio, televisions, newspapers, and billboards to change norms concerning drug abuse by showing positive consequences for non-use, negative consequences for use, and increasing skills for resisting drugs. And (b) to effectively deal with peer pressure. No teen and some adults ever want to be left out. Most find themselves doing things they would never do but just to fit in. We need to prepare teens ahead of time to find an excellent way of saying no to keep them from falling into temptations.
