What I already know about conducting team-based research and consulting for a client

            I know several things about conducting team-based research and consulting for a client. To begin with, I understand that this activity involves teamwork. I know the members who are in my team, their biographical information, and areas of academic specialization. This information is crucial because it will guide us in the allocation of tasks based on one’s abilities and competencies. The members of my team include David, Alice, Joana, and myself. Both David and Alice studied political science at the undergraduate level and are now pursuing a Master’s degree in Public Policy. Joana studied environmental studies at the college level and is now pursuing environmental and energy policy at the university level. I studied finance at the bachelor’s level and I am now pursuing a master’s degree in public policy. Other the academic qualifications of the team members, I know a lot about their hobbies and other interests. For example, David is an Eagle Scout while Joana enjoys fishing and baking.

Regarding the research process and the task of consulting for a client, I know that one must first identify the name of the submitting client or organization. In this case, the organization is “The Office of Personnel Management, Work-Life & Leadership and Executive Development. I also have information regarding the description of the organization, its clients, mission, and services. This information is crucial because it provides foundation for the task of consulting for the client. I also know the purpose of the project in terms of the key questions, motivation for the project, and research objective. Moreover, I know what our team is expected to do and how it will do it. For example, we will describe data that the client will provide to us or that which we will access ourselves using various means, including an online database, a survey, interviews, and existing, relevant practitioner and academic research. Lastly, I know the deliverables for the team-based research project.

What I want to learn about conducting team-based research and consulting for a client

            The things that I want to learn fall into two categories: the research process and the actual outcomes for the targeted client. In terms of the research process, I want to see how best we can share tasks to ensure that we deliver a perfect report to the client. I understand the work of collecting data and compiling the information to form a report is strenuous and there are many challenges to be encountered along the way. I want to learn how to overcome those challenges and to gain experience on how to consult for a client using team-based research outcomes.

            Regarding the actual outcomes for the client, I want to know that contributes most profoundly to turnover rates among federal executives. Towards this end, I am keen to know what exit surveys as well as recent academic and practitioner literature says say about the various predictors of turnover rates among these employees. I also intend to see the similarities and differences in the information provided by these sources of data. Additionally, I am eager to see whether interviews will give us reliable data for use in coming up with valid findings. At the same time, I will focus on identifying patterns of rates of turnover among various agencies and the various costs and benefits associated with that phenomenon. Lastly, I would like to learn about the recommendations that our report will provide and their usefulness in addressing the problem of senior executive turnover.
