            Every individual has a set of beliefs that he/she deems to be good or bad largely due to our innate nature as human beings as well as the environment in which we are nurtured. Nurses often have their own individual beliefs in action about what is important or unimportant, what is good or bad, or even which course of action is worthy or worthless. These beliefs often form the basis to which individuals make decisions about a certain course of action or occurrence. For instance, some people believe in the values of integrity, honesty, trust, truth, etc. This paper describes how alignment between the values of the organization and those of nurses affects nurse engagement and patient outcomes as well as ways through which effective communication techniques can be used to overcome work challenges and promote effective problem-solving.

This means that individuals often seek to measure the extent to which their individual values are consistent with or align to organizational values. Nurse engagement denotes the commitment to and fulfillment of nurses with their nursing jobs (Dempsey & Reilly, 2016). It can also be viewed in terms of nurse commitment to health organizations as well as their nursing profession. Important to note is that nurse engagement correlates with how patients experience health outcomes and the quality of health care provided.

            According to McNeese-Smith and Crook (2003), the absence of alignment between the individual values of nurses and organizational values decrease their job satisfaction as well as nurse effectiveness, which may in turn lead to nurse burnout and turnover. Personal values outline our existence as human beings by directing the priorities we live by. Nurse values are the basis by which nurses make choices both at work and outside work situations. They influence decision making that affect both the professional and personal lives of nurses. Organizational values serve to unite individual values of different people based on the idea that only those who share the same organizational values work in those organizations. When nurses seem to share values in the workplace, trust develops which results in employee loyalty and commitment.

            The alignment between personal values and organization values increases the sense of nurse engagement. Keith and Cianelli (2014) argue that engaged employees tend to be energetic at work, are strongly identified with their work and deem their occupation to be challenging as opposed to stressful. This implies that employees become vigorous in their work as opposed to being exhausted which results in increased effectiveness. In the nursing field, nurse engagement due to value congruency results in improved patient outcomes since the nurses are emotionally involved and committed to improve service delivery.Alignment of nurse values and organizational values results in nurse self-efficacy as nurses become more confident in their personal abilities to perform as expected by the organization. They are also able to make ethically sound decisions related to their nursing practice and work life, which increases their commitment to the profession and overall job satisfaction.

Use of Effective Communication Techniques to Overcome Workplace Challenges

            Like other professions, nurses are often faced with myriad problems in the line of duty. Problems can arise due to conflict interests between nurses or their patients and their families or due to misunderstandings. Similarly, nurses may be faced with scenarios that involve a clash between personal values and professional and organizational values. To ensure that they overcome these problems, it is imperative that nurses embrace measures that address these problems or prevent them from occurring. Effective communication techniques can be used by nurses and medical practitioners to overcome work challenges and promote effective problem solving.

Being empathetic with others helps one discern how their emotions affect others and vice versa.

            Quality service delivery is one of the most revered values by heath service providers. Health care organizations endeavor to provide their patients and families with unparalleled health service in an environment that is healing and responsive. Having worked in various capacities and different hospitals that seek to provide quality health care to patients, I have often felt that this organization value touched my inner core. As an individual, I believe in doing the best I can to make the world a better place through my services. I have therefore felt obliged and happy to work in organizations I felt endeavored to alleviate patient suffering by offering quality health services. This has often translated into good patient outcomes owing to the fact that I am always optimistic and satisfied in my work place whenever I feel the organization is in line with what I believe in- giving quality service to alleviate human suffering.
