Reflection and Plans for Dissemination

PAPAR 1: Throughout NR701 you have learned a great deal in regard to the analysis and application of research evidence to improve health outcomes. You were able to learn how to identify/synthesize what constitutes the best evidence, as well as explore models that can be used to guide an evidence-based practice change.

For this discussion reflect upon your learning this term and discuss how you addressed/met the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) DNP Essentials pertinent to this course (NR701).  Please be sure to follow the guidelines for this discussion and link Essentials to your learning by providing specific examples of activities completed and/or knowledge you gained in the course.

Preparing Your Reflection

The DNP Essentials (AACN, 2006) outline a number of analytic methods for the improvement and transformation of healthcare. Reflect on the NR701 course readings, discussion threads, and applications you have completed across this course and write a short essay regarding the extent to which you feel you are now prepared to

  1. use analytic methods to critically appraise existing literature and other evidence to determine and implement the best evidence for practice;
  2. design and implement processes to evaluate outcomes of practice, practice patterns, and systems of care within a practice setting, healthcare organization, or community against national benchmarks to determine variances in practice outcomes and population trends;
  3. design, direct, and evaluate quality improvement methodologies to promote safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and patient-centered care;
  4. apply relevant findings to develop practice guidelines and improve practice and the practice environment;
  5. function as a practice specialist/consultant in collaborative knowledge-generating research; and
  6. disseminate findings from evidence-based practice and research to improve healthcare outcomes.

Reflection of AACN DNP Essentials1515Introduces the purpose of the reflection and addresses DNP Essentials (AACN, 2006) pertinent to nursing scholarship and analytical methods for evidence-based practice. Include a self-assessment regarding learning that you believe represents your skills, knowledge, and integrative abilities to meet the pertinent DNP competencies as a result of active learning throughout this course. Be sure to link specific DNP competencies to your work in NR701 through use examples from selected readings, threaded discussions, and/or applications to support your assertions.
Plans for Dissemination1515Discuss the various ways you plan on sharing knowledge from your potential DNP Scholarly Project internally (in the practicum site) as well as externally (outside the practicum site). Critically think of potential ways to disseminate knowledge including specific professional conferences, publications, etc.
Conclusion55An effective conclusion identifies the main ideas and major conclusions from the body of your posting. Minor details are left out. Summarize the benefits of the pertinent DNP competencies to the application of analytic methods, as well as how dissemination of knowledge from your potential DNP Scholarly Project can demonstrate professionalism and commitment to nursing as a whole.

Interactive Dialogue1010Provide a minimum of one-substantive post to a topic-related student peer. A substantive post adds value to the thread as a whole by adding content/insights and/or asking questions to promote further discussion.
Grammar, Syntax, APA55Carefully follow 6th edition APA guidelines in regard formatting in-text citations and references list. Include headings to organize posting. Ensure there are no grammatical or sentence structure issues.  Proofread postings to ensure they are free of these errors, as well as misspelled words.
Participation Requirement (5 points deducted if Not Met)MetMetAnswer the discussion question and provide minimum of one-substantive post to a student peer by no later than Wednesday at 11:59pm MT in Week 8 (last day of class). Given there are only 3 days in Week 8, note it is acceptable to provide required posts over one day as long as they are posted by the Wednesday 11:59pm MT deadline. Note 5 points will automatically be deducted if these criteria are not fully met.
Initial Response Post Length Requirement of minimum of 400 words and maximum of 600 words. (5 points deducted if Not Met)MetMetCraft your initial response post in an MS Word document, which allows you the ability to see your total word count. Maintain your initial response post within the required 300-600 words (not including headings and reference list).  Note 5 points will automatically be deducted if post is less than 300 total words (not including headings and reference list) or more than 600 words (not including headings and reference list).

Reflection and Plans for Dissemination

Health and nursing reform require that nursing professionals should transition from the research-focused doctoral degree to an evidence-based program. The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) focuses on evidence-based research as its primary form of instruction, quality improvement, service reform, and system leadership (Eversley, 2015). This reflection expounds on the analysis, design, and implementation as well as evaluation of the process. It then focuses on how to disseminate skills and information acquired from DNP training.

The main elements of the DNP training include a development of an advanced ability to handle complex clinical and management responsibilities, enhanced leadership and clinical skills to strengthen health services, improved attitude towards nursing and an enhanced ability to attract nursing individuals from diverse backgrounds other than nursing (McDonough, 2011). In this training, there has been exposure to practical aspects and interdisciplinary interaction between clinical nursing, nursing accountability, leadership and management (Shaw, 2011). As a creative and dynamic individual, I have been able to combine my previous skills and apply them to this curriculum in a way that allows me to test out theoretical knowledge and ideas. Through this approach, I have identified both strong strategies that need to be preserved and non-beneficial techniques that do not create much value. The primary method of evaluation has been through experiments, analysis of results and comparison with factual sources (Pham, 2016).

This training emphasizes on the need to disseminate acquired and tested information as a method of improving healthcare and encouraging more people to join the nursing profession. As an individual and a nursing stakeholder, I acknowledge that media publications through nursing journals and online publications can be an effective method of teaching others (Wilenski, 2016). My training experiences have enabled me to understand the challenge of limited information particularly on evidence based research and training. This limitation has equipped me with information on the informational gap that can be handled through the dissemination of educative publications. In addition, seminars and workshops can be used to reach out to nurses operating in specific areas of specialization.

Conclusively, DNP competencies are important contributors to the process of nursing reform and, by extension, overall healthcare improvement. The ability to improve the clinical performance of nursing is now as equally as important as strengthening the communication and management aspects of nursing. These competencies create a better and more interactive view of nursing among patients, other nurses and other health professionals who may have much to contribute in terms of information sharing. These DNP competencies have transformed my idea of and approach towards nursing and healthcare. In essence, nursing should be an interactive and compassionate practice that is geared towards the preservation of life and the satisfaction of the nursing sector.
