Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand people’s emotions, to be aware of them, and to adapt to immediate surroundings in order to achieve personal and professional success. There are five components of emotional intelligence at work, and they include as developed by Goleman (1995a) and they include self-awareness, self-regulation, internal motivation, empathy, and social skills. The focus of this essay, though, will be on self-assessment. It will identify the behaviors someone with strong self-awareness demonstrates within the context of leading and managing groups.

Self-awareness is the conscious knowledge of one’s personality and individuality. It is the ability to recognize one’s feelings and their causes. It also entails understanding their effects on other people. There are three main aspects that should be put into consideration are self-confidence, realistic self-assessment, and a self-deprecating sense of humor (Goleman, 1995a). It is also important to note that alexithymia is a medical condition in which one is unable to identify and describe their emotions.

Self-confidence refers to the element that makes a person to trust their own abilities, qualities, and judgment. On the other hand, realistic self-assessment refers to the ability of someone to evaluate themselves in order to know his/her strengths and limits. Lastly, a self-deprecating sense of humor refers to the ability to show and point out disapproval in themselves in a humorous way without necessarily becoming self-loathing or self-sabotaging.

As mentioned above, for one to be a good leader, one must be able to trust their instincts, assess their strengths and weaknesses, and be able to take criticism with the aim of making the necessary changes in the way groups are led and managed. For example, a good leader uses this aspect of emotional confidence to inspire his/her followers.
