Answer
An Example of an Ethical Violation or Research Misconduct
In recent years, there has been a growing recognition that science and technology play an important part in shaping the lives of the public. For this reason, support from the public for research in form of public funding for researchers and research workcontinues to grow (Resnik, 2012).However, this has also lead to increased pressure on the researchers – as public servants and as professionals – to deliver some forms of findings and give insights to some pertinent public issues. Consequently, another area of concern has emerged to the effect of questioning the way these research worksare being done (Resnik, 2012).This brings into perspective the question of responsible conduct in research or in other words, research misconduct.
Research misconductinvolves submission of research findings that are in transgression of the fundamental moral principles of responsible research work. This may be in form of falsification or fabrication of data and/or the use of other people’s intellectual material, property, or ideas as their own or without acknowledgment of the original owner. Therefore, research misconduct can be defined as the use of false, fabricated and/or plagiarize material in the process of presenting, investigating, or carrying outa research, or in the submission of the results of their research work(Resnik, 2012).
Numerous research studies have been deemed to have been done unethically. An example is the now retracted research work done by Andrew Wakefield and companions on the link between autism and vaccines. Wakefield’s paper asserted that there is a link between vaccines, particularly, the measles mumps-rebulla (MMR) vaccine and autism (Sabra, Bellanti, & Colón, 2014). However, on scrutiny and follow-up research works on the same topic, it was found that the conclusions arrived at bypaper and the research was based on falsified data(Resnik, 2012).Although the paper was later retracted in 2010, the damage it had done was notable. It leads to the promotion of the anti-vaccine societies meaning that the communities became less receptive to vaccination campaigns for fear of what the paper proposed, subsequently putting the lives of the public at risk and vulnerable to an otherwise eradicabledisease(Resnik, 2012).
Issues ofresearch misconduct can greatly be reduced when the atmosphere that currently exists where researchers have to compete for publication is either reduced or eliminated in totality(Resnik, 2012).Scientific and/or medical research is a rigorousandtime-consuming process that requires patience. However, researchers, today are constantly under pressure from publishers and the public to find solutions to various issues that are affecting the society while at the same time under pressure from those who provide funding for these projects to justify the funding(Resnik, 2012).This pressure may lead to a compromise on the rigorous nature of the research where some aspects may be overlooked in order to appease the public and the financiers. The best way to prevent misconduct in research work is by reducing and eventually eliminating all forms of pressure on researchers.
