Teaching and Nursing (Question 2)

            Clinical experience is a fundamental part of nursing education.It prepares nurse students to be able to accomplish tasks and become acutely aware of the clinical principles in practice (Bastable, 2014). Moreover, it stimulates students use their critical thinking skills in real-life problem-solving.During my clinical practice, I enjoyed the experience of conducting clinical research. I was posted at a local clinic where I got to workin close collaboration with a qualified doctor who also served as my supervisor. The learning environment here was ideal in the sense that the nurses and other practitioners were extremely helpful and supportive. They did not perceive me as a nurse helper, but rather, as a practicing nurse, and this got me very excited. With the help of my supervisor, I was taken through the crucial steps of the research process, and I got to learn quite a lot. I gained invaluable experience from working with various patients as well as getting involved in the research process. Furthermore, I gained meaningful insight on the entire process of direct patient-based research, and I got to learn about the details underlying the planning and execution of large-scale clinical investigation.

While still there, I happened to witness a case of a patient who had been declared as mentally incapacitated. He was all over the place yelling, but the staff all worked together to help in calming him. This challenged and motivated me at the same time because I had never encountered such a situation in real life. Witnessing the situation first-handinspired me intrinsically to work even harder and grasp the much-needed skills to help such individuals. This occurrence coincides with the social learning theory which acknowledges that learning is based on four requirements: observation, retention, reproduction, and motivation (Bastable, 2014).
