Grounded theory: A Qualitative Research Design   Qualitative research designs are used to gain insight, describe life experiences, and explore the depth and complexity in phenomenon. It is imperative that all qualitative researchers use strategies to enhance the credibility of a study during the research design (Noble & Smith, 2015). The designs or approaches of qualitative research include phenomenological research, grounded theory research, ethnographic research, exploratory-descriptive research, historical research and mixed methods. Qualitative research questions articulate what the researcher wants to know about the intentions and perspectives of those involved in social interactions and are developed and refined in all stages of the reflexive and interactive inquiry process (Agee, 2009). For this discussion, I will formulate a research question from grounded theory. The purpose of grounded theory is theory development, and it involves constant comparative analysis. Grounded theory research investigates a human process with a sociological focus, with problem and purpose statements that identify the shared human process (Gray, Grove, & Sutherland, 2017). The process begins with the researcher asking a question or series of questions designed to lead to theory development regarding some aspect of social life. Grounded theory is used in discovering problems that exist, and how people react and handle the situation. Grounded theory is valid because it involves formulation, testing, development and refining of information. Research methods in grounded theory include interviews, observation, record review or a combination of methods. Using grounded theory, a researcher goes back and forth between data collection and analysis. This is known as iteration (Gray, Grove, & Sutherland, 2017) . Grounded theory provides qualitative researchers with guidelines for collecting and analyzing data. Qualitative analysis is a time-consuming process that should outline the key steps that move from raw data to interpretation and explanation (Sidhu, Jones, & Stevenson, 2017). An example of a research question congruent with grounded theory would be:
How do student health nurses see their role in the care delivery process in primary care settings? To answer this question, primary care nurses could be interviewed, observed while working at the student health center, or given questionnaires to gain insight and data. Analysis includes concept development, reduction, selective sampling of literature, selective sampling of subjects, emergence of key concepts, modification and integration. In order to gain insight, describe life experiences, and explore the depth and complexity of a phenomenon, qualitative research designs may be used. Some of these designs include grounded theory, exploratory-descriptive research, research phenomenological research, ethnographic research among others. Therefore, a researcher can choose to use either of the research design. However, to make qualitative research more fruitful, a researcher should stick to a specific strategy and implement it to the letter (Maxwell,2013).
