Evaluating Contemporary Knowledge
The business and work environments have undergone the most dramatic shift following changes in technology, financial markets, and industrial operations. In addition, growing rates of globalization and reorganization of leadership and management structures further complicate operation within the markets. In order to remain profitable and functional amidst this intense shift, leaders must employ core competencies and strategies (Pabst, 2011). Some of these core competencies include management of human capital, service to employees, managing and being flexible to change, conflict management, technology management, communication, and innovation.
Organizational leadership and management, requires sequential separation and development of the departmental units and their functioning. This has necessitated the breakdown of the leadership and management process and the allocation of responsibilities (Pabst, 2011). Ideally, the breakdown of leadership is highly reliant on the construction of the leadership unit based on fundamental core competencies. These competencies are evaluated through the performance of the company as well as technical and human studies often through qualitative procedures.
Human resource management is a vital component of organizational management. The interaction between economic, legal, ethical and psycho-social factors adversely affects the operation of human capital as the main drivers of organizations. Competent leaders must thus possess the intellectual and emotional intelligence required to sustain the human components of operation (Powell, 2007).
Effective communication is a complex process that combines humanistic and technical considerations. The implementation of effective communication patterns at the horizontal and vertical levels is crucial to the dissemination of ideals and objectives within the organization. The ability of a leader to facilitate good communication in accurate balance is regularly a guarantee of constructing cohesion and cooperation based on the unification and synchronization of ideals and goals (Pabst, 2011). Communication and writing courses have actualized and demystified the role of communication in this sector.
Amidst the extremely rapid technological change, one of the core competencies for leadership is the speed and flexibility to adapt and efficiently implement technology into these organizations. This is sustained by effective and continuous learning supported by true inspiration and a need to grow (Schraeder, Freeman and Durham, 2007). Leaders must thus be able to motivate their human resources to adapt and develop personal interests in technological learning in equal measure to the technical advancements. IT courses most of which are practice based have offered insight into the massive potential and size of the technological sector and its integration into all organizations.
The interactions within human components often result in conflict. More recently, the conflict between human and non-human components has emerged as a complex area of challenge. Competent leadership develops a strategy that analyzes the diversity and differences that often result in conflicts. As globalization continues to bring the is diversity even closer at the organizational level, it is becoming even more imperative to develop long-term systems that incorporate differences in ideologies but support the common goal of the organization (Pabst, 2011). Highly reliant on human resource management and communication, conflict management if handled appropriately results in creativity and development of cutting edge ideas.
Finally, innovation and service to the organization are perhaps at the core of effective organizational leadership. A service-oriented leadership style fosters trust and tolerance and establishes feelings of satisfaction and potential for growth. Additionally, this positive environment supports innovation not only at the top leadership roles but equally at the grass root organizational level (Pabst, 2011). An environment with good and open communication allows for the development of confidence and the subsequent facilitation of innovation and expansion of strategies.
Leadership and management must be separated for their goals and differences but equally equipped with the skills and ability to function together in perpetuity. While management focuses on the technical aspects of daily operation, leadership concentrates on the ability to inspire teamwork, high level performance, accountability and long-term execution. Organizational leadership and management can only be effective where the interaction between separate core competencies is established and stable or progressive systems of cooperation are established in these units. Through a gradual exposure of these core competencies as subjects of holistic study, I have appreciated the actual foundation of leadership based on the development of individuals on their strong principles, ethics and under legal consideration. Truly, the development of an individual leader is the basic component of progressive leadership and organizational development.
