There are various human activities that lead to the harm of the environment, and in turn affect the human health. The release of the estrogen compounds into the water bodies has affected the marine life. Estrogen hormones enter the aquatic environment after being excreted by humans and animals. Estrogen compounds that are found in birth control pills affect both animals and human beings. When released into water bodies, the hormones lead to “feminization” of male fish thus resulting in serious sexual dysfunction (Adeel et al., 108). The hormones have the same effect on human health. The endocrine disrupting compounds lead to can lead to a declined sperm count. They can also lead to birth of children with congenital malformations. The hormones have also been related to the increased incidences of certain cancers.

The increased use of plastics has lead to the pollution of soil and water sources. Chemical moieties that include chloride, heavy metals, and phthalates are not chemically bound to the polymeric chain hence can migrate to surrounding medium (Halden 178). They lead to contamination of soil as well as ground and surface waters. The additives used in plastics are harmful to human health as they can lead to endocrine disruption. Exposure to the plastic additives can lead to sexual dysfunction disorders that include reduced fertility and abnormal sexual maturation (Halden 179).
