AACN BSN Essentials (Essential IX)

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has outlined nine Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice that provide the framework for the current nursing curriculum (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2008). In this essay, I will focus on Essential IX: Baccalaureate Generalist Nursing Practice, which perfectly captures my personal interest in terms of a professional nursing career. In making this decision, I particularly like the way it integrates all the knowledge and skills that are present in all the first eight essentials of the accelerated baccalaureate programs (BSN) (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2008).


I choose to focus on Essential IX because it not only integrates the knowledge and skills acquired in all the other eight essentials of the BSN but also because it gives me a framework for practicing on people from all ages and groups across the lifespan of all healthcare environments. As a future professional nurse, I would like to be of the kind that knows something, however little, about every healthcare situation that is presented by the prevailing circumstances, and that is exactly what Essential IX offers. In this regard, there are no limitations in terms of what knowledge and skill set can be acquired as per the provisions of this Essential (Callister & Hobbins-Garbett, 2000). Moreover, it aims to make the nurse fully equipped for whatever situation may arise with the extensive knowledge of, but not limited to, health promotion, disease management and illness (Flinders, 2013).

Overall, it comes as no surprise that times are changing, medical equipment are becoming sophisticated, different illnesses are emerging and so is the need for variations in the care provided for different patients. Essential IX will ensure that I am well equipped to deal with the different changes that arise in the contemporary healthcare environment in which I will be operating in future as a professional nurse. I will use the knowledge and skills that I have acquired to provide the best possible services to all patients, whether in my care or not, seeing as I will be well-trained to deal with all patients without distinction.
